Saint Patrick’s Day 2008 – Whiskey in the jar!Ahh, It is 3 am. Still not sleepy as the last couple of days destroyed my sleeping schedule. Especially the Three Legged Race on Paddy’s day threw me off. My mate Søren and I have been participating for the past couple of years. Last year we were even so lucky to win!
As we are going to Dublin next year to write our master thesis, we entered this years race with three goals:
1. Win …
2. … in less that 30 minutes.
3. Then start over and finish the race again.
27 minutes after getting the first beer in hand we took a look at the checklist and made a mental note saying “check” next to the two first entries. We then looked at each other, paid another 100 kr. (it all goes to charity), got a new map, and started running back to Kennedy’s.
It was indeed an epic race this year!
To be entirely honest we didn’t believe in it right away. We got a very bad place in line even though we waited outside in the blistering cold for almost an hour. When we finally got our beer there were 50 people in front of us, with the foremost guys having about 5 minutes head start. After passing The Shamrock it still didn’t look good and we were starting to lose faith, as we made our way to The Globe. When we neared the pub we saw people coming out and counted 10 guys ahead of us. We decided that now was the time to do this, drank our beer, and headed towards The Irish Rover. This is where our experience from the past races kicked in, as we made a shortcut around Vor Frue Kirke, and another through Jorks Passage. When we entered The Irish Rover people were cheering: “You’re the first, lads!”. However competition was not far behind and when we left The Irish Rover it was down to a heads-up against another team.
We walked right behind the two guys, through Jorks Passage, heading for Bloomsday. As we arrived at Gråbøder Torv our competitors took the left route, and we started running right. We got the lead and entered the pub first. After fighting over the stamper, the beers and battling the stairs to get out of the pub we exited first, with the other guys right behind us. Fortunately we still had some energy left and started running towards The Dubliner we got there, immediately drank our beers and crossed the finish line first. I looked at the time: 27 minutes. Wooot!
The rest of the day was a blast! The atmosphere were incredible, the people cheery, and the free whiskey we won amazingly good. Thank you again for organizing such a great Three Legged Race – and we are inviting everybody to Dublin next year to race us there
